FEDERAL GOVERNMENT COLLEGE / MODEL SECONDARY SCHOOL
TEACHER'S LESSON PLAN & NOTE OF LESSON (NERDC CURRICULUM)
| DATE: Monday, 29th September 2026 | CLASS: SSS 1 (Senior Secondary) | TERM: First Term |
| SUBJECT: Biology | WEEK: Week 2 | DURATION: 40 Minutes (Single Period) |
| TOPIC: Classification of Living Things | AGE OF LEARNERS: 14 – 16 Years | |
| SUB-TOPIC: Binomial Nomenclature and the Kingdoms of Living Things (Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia) | ||
By the end of the 40-minute lesson, the students should be able to:
- Define biological classification and state at least two reasons why living organisms are classified.
- Explain the Binomial System of Nomenclature introduced by Carl Linnaeus with at least two examples (e.g., Homo sapiens, Zea mays).
- List the seven taxonomic hierarchy levels in ascending and descending order (Kingdom, Phylum/Division, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species).
- Differentiate between prokaryotic organisms (Monera) and eukaryotic organisms with examples.
- Wall charts illustrating the 5-Kingdom system of classification and Linnaean taxonomic hierarchy.
- Fresh biological specimens: potted flowering plant (Plantae), live earthworm / preserved insect (Animalia), bread mould or mushroom (Fungi).
- Standard NERDC-approved Senior Secondary Biology textbook (Essential Biology / Modern Biology by Ramalingam).
- Whiteboard, dry-erase markers, and lesson summary cards.
Students are already familiar with the primary characteristics of living things (MR NIGER D) and can distinguish between plants and animals from their JSS 3 Basic Science curriculum.
| Step / Time | Teacher's Activities | Students' Activities |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1: Introduction (5 mins) |
Teacher reviews characteristics of living organisms by asking students to name five organisms in the school compound. Teacher introduces classification by asking how books are arranged in a library. | Students respond to questions, identify local animals and plants, and relate library categorization to scientific classification. |
| Step 2: Content Delivery (18 mins) |
Teacher explains binomial nomenclature: rules of writing scientific names (Genus capitalized, species lowercase, underlined or italicized). Teacher walks students through the 7 taxonomic levels using the mnemonic: "King Philip Came Over For Good Soup". | Students copy the taxonomic levels into their notebooks, practice pronouncing generic and specific names, and formulate the mnemonic. |
| Step 3: Guided Practice (10 mins) |
Teacher displays specimens (mushroom, potted bean seedling, grasshopper) and invites student representatives to classify each into its kingdom. | Students examine specimens, debate characteristics (e.g., autotrophic vs heterotrophic), and place them in the correct kingdom. |
| Step 4: Summary & Conclusion (7 mins) |
Teacher summarizes the main points: why classification matters, Linnaeus' contribution, and the five kingdoms. Teacher resolves student questions. | Students ask clarifying questions and note down key summary points in their notebooks. |
Teacher asks the following questions to verify mastery:
- Who is regarded as the father of modern taxonomy?
- Write the scientific name for the housefly (Musca domestica) and modern human (Homo sapiens) observing correct binomial rules.
- Arrange the following in correct order: Class, Species, Order, Kingdom, Genus, Family, Phylum.
- State two reasons why a mushroom cannot be classified under Kingdom Plantae.
1. Make a labeled drawing of an Amoeba (Kingdom Protista) and state two organelle adaptations for locomotion and osmoregulation.
2. In your own words, explain why viruses pose a unique challenge to the five-kingdom classification system.
